African-American Read-In
July 18, 2026 | Waterloo West High sChool auditorium
The first African American Read-In at Waterloo West High School, hosted by the 1619 Freedom School was on March 15, 2025. It was a community event celebrating African American literature, Black history, literacy, and representation. The event was organized by Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of the 1619 Freedom School, after Waterloo Community Schools withdrew from the annual statewide African American Read-In.
The program featured nationally recognized Black authors Tami Charles, Derrick Barnes, and Jacqueline Woodson, as well as Hannah-Jones. Students from the 1619 Freedom School also performed a reader’s theater of Born on the Water. More than 900 people attended, and approximately 3,000 free books were distributed to children and families.
